“Men came to our home one night, Roberto tells the Great Chamberlain. They tied Dad to his chair, and they beat him to own up. I do not know what they wanted. Standing on the tips of his toes, on the prison bench, too little to catch sight of the street, Roberto can only see the stars, his arms extended to the sky, his fingers tight around the bars of the small skylight he uses as window. He is in prison because his father was a political opponent in his country.

The Great Chamberlain drags the small boy with him on this long journey.
